Looks like an exciting season for water polo in Pacific Coast League

Spencer Sellwood of Northwood takes a shot this week against Tesoro.

Based on a couple games this week, it could be shaping up to be another strong year for water polo in the Pacific Coast League.

Northwood opened the season with a 13-10 victory over Tesoro while Woodbridge defeated Dana Hills 11-7.

Both teams figure to be in the running for the Pacific Coast League title along with some other teams.

Clearly, with Corona del Mar moving out of the league, the league title race is wide open.

WARRIORS RANKED IN CIF DIVISION 1-2

CIF officials are conducting the CIF water polo polls a bit differently.

“We’re in the 1-2 (division),” Woodbridge Coach Matt Campbell said. “They rank the top 20 and in the last week, they rank the top eight and put them in D1. And then they take the next 16 and that’s D2. I would think we’re a good D2 team and we should be able to compete there. We got moved up and I think our players wanted that challenge.”

IRVINE AND UNIVERSITY IN ACTION THURSDAY

Irvine and University’s football teams, who both opened with losses, didn’t have much time to prepare for their next games which will be Thursday, Aug. 30. Irvine faces Sunny Hills at Buena Park High and University meets Orange at El Modena.

WOODBRIDGE HOME AGAINST FOUNTAIN VALLEY

Woodbridge football coach Rick Gibson believes that Fountain Valley, the team the Warriors face Friday night at University, will be the toughest team the Warriors have faced all season.

Fountain Valley is 2-0.

“It’s probably the best team we’ve faced so far,” said Gibson. “I think they’re a better football team than El Modena and El Modena was very good. But I truly believe Fountain Valley has more weapons offensively and defensively they create some problems. They have some size up front.”
