One girls player and one boys basketball player will be selected as players of the game in the Santa Ana Prep Classic Friday night, March 27 at Segerstrom High School.
The event, presented by the Raya Foundation, begins with a three-point contest at 5:30 p.m. followed by the girls game at 6:30 p.m. and the boys game at approxmately 8 p.m.
The girls player of the game award is named after former Segerstrom girls basketball coach Shonya Pouncey, who died in August 2025.
“Coach Pouncy coached in previous games,” said Leon Raya, event organizer, “and he was an
enthusiastic supporter. He made sure every young lady got their fair share of playing time and coached
with passion and fun.”
The awards are being voted upon by a committee of volunteers, including former high school players
and coaches. Danielle Saldavia Pouncey, coach Pouncey’s wife, is scheduled to be on hand to present
the girls player of the game award.
“Coach’s commitment to bettering the lives of young people and his passion for coaching, is an
example of everything this event is about,” said Raya.
Coach Pouncey coached basketball and football for many years and recently guided the Segerstrom
Lady Jaguars to three league championships in four years. He served as a student intervention assistant at Cerritos High School and Haskell Middle School.
Admission to the event is $10 with children under 10 years admitted feee. Middle and high school student tickets are available for $5. Ticket sales begin at 5 p.m. at the gym.
