Irvine boys basketball team wins first two league games and finishes second in Rancho Alamitos Tournament

Irvine High’s boys basketball team has had a productive first two months of the season.

The Vaqueros are 11-8 overall and 2-0 in Pacific Coast League play and finished second last week in the Rancho Alamitos Tournament.

Irvine went 3-1 and defeated John Glenn, Oxford Academy, and Artesia before losing to Garden Grove 69-65 in the championship game.

Senior Devin Lee was selected to the all-tournament team and finished with 15 points in the championship game. Senior Kyle Anderson added 26 points and made eight three pointers while senior Chris Dean scored 14 points.

“In the championship game our team did a great job of following the game plan, and kept the game close the entire game,” said Coach Kris Klamberg. “We saw multiple lead changes throughout the game,  and saw Kyle Anderson have a great shooting night, making eight three pointers. Senior Devin Lee was solid throughout the tournament and was named to the all-tournament team.”

In the two leagues games Irvine defeated Woodbridge 53-51 and University 83-73. Kyle Anderson scored 17 points in the win vs. Woodbridge, and senior Chase Porter scored a season high 27 points against University. Senior Hunter Anderson added 19 points.

“Our players have done a nice job preparing for the first two games and have executed the game plan well during the games,” Klamberg said.

Irvine hosts Beckman Tuesday at 7 p.m. as league play resumes.
