University splits two games; meets Woodbridge Wednesday in PCL showdown

University High School’s girls flag football team is gearing up for a showdown with defending Pacific Coast League champion Woodbridge Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at University.

Woodbridge leads the league and University is in second place.

The Trojans also meet Laguna Beach on Monday.

University Coach Jeff Marchiorlatti said, ” …. we will not overlook any opponent, but our game vs. Woodbridge is certainly on our minds because of not only the rivalry, but for the first place battle in the PCL.”

The Trojans (3-3 overall) went 1-1 last week, defeating Irvine 28-0 on Wednesday. The Vaqueros came into the game 3-1.

“They are very well coached but we were up to the task and played well on both sides of the ball,” Marchiorlatti said. “Our defense registered another shutout with three interceptions and our quarterback Carson Cruz had three TD passes.

“Elyse Mills made her presence felt at running back on offense with some great runs and catches and had an interception. Natalia Anania had the play of the game with an incredible deep interception. Our freshman newcomer, Chloe Cho, made a significant impact with a rushing touchdown.

The MVP of the game was Arden Marchiorlatti, who on defense had six flag pulls and an interception and eight receptions and two touchdowns on offense.

University opened the week with an 18-0 loss against Northwood.

“The score is not indicative of the game,” the coach said. “It was a battle. Northwood has a very good quarterback and they beat us deep a couple of times. We also couldn’t take advantage of red zone opportunities. I’m very proud of the effort our team put forth against a very strong Northwood squad.

“Our defense was solid aside from a few mis-steps. We continue to be led on defense by our MVP of the game and senior team captain Carmen Cruz, who had six flag pulls (tackles) and two pass defenses. In my view, she is the PCL defensive player of the year so far. Sarae Amaro and Ella Anderson also had a quarterback sack each.”
