Northwood High School’s football team topped Sonora 26-8 Friday night in a home game at Portola.
In a defensive first-half battle, the Timberwolves (2-0) drove three times inside the 5-yard line. Northwood got a 20-yard Cole Hidalgo field goal and a Joseph Harper 1-yard touchdown to take a 10-0 halftime lead.
Northwood’s defense limited Sonora (0-2) to just 115 yards and six first downs with the bulk of it coming from 88 rushing yards on 20 carries by Anthony Abad.
Sonora’s sophomore quarterback Tucker Hunnicutt threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Alexsay Nazaroff in the third quarter.
Jack Brucker had 18 carries for 63 yards and two second-half touchdowns for Northwood. Timberwolves quarterback Gavin Lounsbury completed 10 of 14 passes for 103 yards, including a pair of 15-yard receptions by Parsa Rabiee.
Sonora kept the game close by forcing three Northwood turnovers.
