Former Woodbridge standout Dereck ‘DJ’ Moore has a big game starting for New Mexico

Former Woodbridge High School football star Dereck “DJ” Moore had a big game recently starting at strong safety as a true freshman for the University of New Mexico in the team’s victory over Hawaii on Saturday, Oct. 21

“My son DJ just completed his first D1 football start against University of Hawaii as a true freshman,” his father Dereck Moore said last week. “He played all four quarters and also played on the kick-off team and the kick-off return teams as well.”

New Mexico won the game 42-21 and the 6-3, 199-pound Moore, who was substituting for an injured player, led the team in tackles with seven, his father said.

Head coach Danny Gonzales praised Moore’s effort in the Albuquerque Journal as being “unbelievable,” and said the former Warriors’ standout had a great week of practice.

“DJ has gotten off to a great start,” said Woodbridge Coach Aaron Craver. “I’m proud of him. We’re proud of him here at Woodbridge.”

“I’m extremely excited for this guy,” his father added.

Moore signed his letter with New Mexico in February. He was an outstanding wide receiver and strong safety ending his career by by being named the specialist MVP of the Pacific Hills League.

“It’s very special because not a lot of people get to go to college for free, let alone play sports, so I feel blessed,” he said at the signing.
