Cypress edges Pacifica for share of title; Crean Lutheran, Woodbridge and Villa Park win

CYPRESS 2, PACIFICA 1 (9 innings): The Centurions (21-7, 9-1) won a share of the Empire League title with a win at home against Pacifica in extra innings Thursday at Cypress snapping Pacifica’s 16-game winning streak. The Centurions’ Matthew “Chewey” Thomas hit a 2-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the game, countering a home run in the top of the inning by Pacifica’s Chad Gurnea.

Luke Matlock started on the mound for Cypress and did not allow a run over 4 1/3 innings striking out two. Gabe Cobian came on to get the win for the Centurions, going 4 2/3 innings, allowing one run and one hit and striking out seven.

Gurnea pitched seven shutout innings for Pacifica (21-3, 9-1).

“It was honestly a classic dogfight,” Cypress Coach John Weber said Friday. “Gurney, their starter, was awesome and kept us in check. Matlock pitched his tail off as well. Cobian came in and got out of a great situation. Momentum was flipping back and forth; we had a lineout, a double play and somehow you know we found a way to win.”

A coin flip was held to determine the No. 1 seed in the CIF playoffs and Cypress won the toss, according to Weber. By winning the flip, the Centurions should be home for the first round of the CIF Division 1 playoffs next week.

Pacifica won Tuesday’s game 4-2 at Pacifica.

WOODBRIDGE 2, NORTHWOOD 1 ((8 innings): The Warriors (23-5, 19-2) wrapped up Pacific Coast League play with a victory at Ryan Lemmon Stadium Thursday night on senior night for the Warriors. Jake Amundson notched his sixth win of the year.

In the eighth inning, Matthew Kuromoto doubled and Brandon Abernathy singled to put runners on first and third. Kuromoto scored on a wild pitch with one out. Amundson allowed three hits and struck out four. Kuromoto was 2 for 4 with a double, RBI and run scored. Brandon Abernathy, Amundson, Chad Jacob and Alex Serafin were all 1 for 3.

PCL champion Woodbridge and second place Northwood (17-11, 13-8) are headed to the CIF playoffs in different divisions next week.

CREAN LUTHERAN 2, TUSTIN 0: The Saints (20-8, 6-4) wrapped up Empire League play with a win at Tustin Thursday. Wyatt Nichol pitched five innings, allowing two hits and no runs and struck out 11. Jack Sand and Mark Fedro had solo home runs, according to Coach Jake Haney.

VILLA PARK 6, EL MODENA 5 (11 innings): The Spartans (18-10, 7-2) finished the regular season with a win. AJ Kroedel got the win, pitching five innings, allowing a run and striking out four. Andrew Grove hit two home runs and drove in four. Kroedel was 2 for 5 with a run scored and an RBI.
