Garden Grove High School’s football team put together a strong running game and solid defense to defeat Segerstrom 31-23 Friday night in the Big Four League opener at Segerstrom.

The two teams shared the league title last year.

Garden Grove (7-1, 1-0) was led by Malachi Bey, who had 270 yards rushing and four touchdowns, according to Argonauts Coach Ricardo Cepeda.

Mykel Isguerra had 41 yards rushing and seven tackles and Daniel Martinez had 35 yards rushing, the coach added.

On defense, Garden Grove was led by Malik Peah, who recovered two fumbles.

Segerstrom (1-7, 0-1) was led by Noble Acosta and Daniel Solano on offense, according to Jaguars Coach Joseph Tagaloa.

“Our guys played their heart out, Tagaloa said Saturday. “We obviously did not get the results that we were looking for, but we played hard all night. Offensively we turned the ball over, which proved to be the difference in the game.

“With that being said, we had tremendous efforts turned in by Noble Acosta who led our team in rushing and Daniel Solano who made multiple big catches to keep drives alive.

“On defense we struggled to get stops, but played hard. We will make some adjustments so that we get better. Special teams played solid all night.”
