Century High School boys basketball coach Andres Hernandez has resigned after two seasons, Athletic Director Matt Cavanaugh said Friday.

“I have been at Century for 10 years, the last two of which I was the head varsity coach,” Hernandez said Saturday. “There are some professional endeavors that extend past the basketball court that require my immediate time and focus.

“Matt Cavanaugh and the entire Century staff/administration have been extremely supportive during my time as a student, athlete and coach. Although it was a tough decision to make, I am excited for what lies ahead.”

Century was 19-9 and captured the Orange League title with a 10-0 record in Hernandez’ first season. The Centurions were 3-7 during the past abbreviated season.

“We struggled like most schools,” he said. “We were 2-6 in league with a very young team. We did not get an opportunity to play any pre-league games. The kids absolutely played their hearts out.”

In an interview with OC Sports Zone in June 2018, Hernandez said he wanted to give back to the program as its new head coach.

Cavanaugh said he is trying to also fill head coaching positions for girls volleyball, girls basketball and coed track and field. Those interested should send teaching/coaching resumes to him: matt.cavanaugh@sausd.us to begin the process.
