University’s first year coach Vince Mesa has been named the Los Angeles Chargers Orange County high school football coach of the week, the Chargers and CIF officials announced Wednesday.
Mesa, a former Orange Coast College assistant coach, helped the program snap a 12-game losing streak dating back to 2018 with a 13-12 victory over Ocean View Friday. University is 1-1 and hosts Century Friday night.
“I’m of course honored to be named Coach of the week, but I’m just the representative for the work everyone is putting in from our staff, our players, boosters, and school,” Mesa said. “I can’t do it alone, and we have a great community behind the team.”
The football program will receive $1,000 from the Chargers but Mesa said he hasn’t decided what the money will be used for yet.
“I am overly excited about the opportunity to coach at University as it’s a school that I’ve always held in high regard,” Mesa told OC Sports Zone before the season. “I plan to bring all my experience, passion, and work ethic to the program.”
