Just minutes after the first pitch Tuesday, University High School’s softball team had its opening round CIF So Cal Regional Division IV against Marquez halted by heavy rain and lightning in the area.
The Trojans recorded two outs in the top of the first inning before a lightning strike nearby forced the teams and fans to seek shelter. Under CIF rules, games are stopped for at least 30 minutes after a lightning strike.
As the stormy weather continued, the 30-minute delay quickly turned into a daylong pause of the contest.
The game is scheduled to resume Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Uni. University, the CIF Division 6 champion, is the No. 3 seed and Marquez the No. 6 seed.
The winner of the game plays at No. 2 Woodlake (28-1) Thursday at 4 p.m.
