Tustin schools remain closed through May 1; breakfast and lunch meals continuing

At a special Board meeting Monday night, the Tustin Unified School District Board of Education voted to extend school closures and continue distance learning through Friday, May 1, in response to the coronavirus pandemic and stay-at-home order issued by Gov. Gavin Newsom.  

According to the release issued by TUSD officials, the District Administration Center will also remain closed.  Individuals who need assistance can call the District at (714) 730-7301. 

“The health and safety of our students and staff is a responsibility we take seriously,” TUSD Board President Francine Scinto said in a statement. “We are in constant communication with the State of California and Orange County education and public health agencies on how we can keep our learning community safe and healthy through this time.”   

“We know school closures and the stay-at-home order will continue to create challenges for our students, families and staff,” TUSD Superintendent Dr. Gregory Franklin said.  “Despite these challenges, our dedicated teachers and staff continue to work diligently to provide a positive and supportive educational experience for all students.”

Tustin Unified will continue to provide essential services, including food service to students.

The district’s Grab-and-Go breakfast and lunch meals will continue three days per week – Monday, Tuesday and Thursday – from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Robert Heideman Elementary School, 15571 Williams Street; A.G. Currie Middle School, 1401 Sycamore Avenue; and Tustin High School, 1171 El Camino Real.  On Tuesdays and Thursdays, students receive four meals – two for the current day and two for the next day. 

The meals are provided at no cost to all children in the district 18 years and younger (it is not necessary for them to be in the free and reduced lunch program).  Service is set up as a drive-thru style for pickup; however, walk-ups are accepted.  For more information, call the TUSD Nutrition Services Department at (714) 730-7301, ext. 396.

With the extension of school closures, TUSD is reminding the community that school campuses are closed to the public.  In collaboration with city agencies and the Orange County Health Care Agency, the district is requesting that community members, including children and teens, do not come onto school campuses to use play structures, blacktop spaces and fields. 

“TUSD custodians have been working very hard to keep our schools sanitized and safe, and with schools closed, there is no reason for anyone to be on campus at this time,” Franklin said.
