Corona del Mar High School’s baseball team captured a 2-0 Surf League victory over Fountain Valley Friday at CdM.
Hogan Smith (3-2) threw a complete game one-hitter to record the win for the Sea Kings (8-8, 1-1)
Tim Grack threw a two-hitter for Fountain Valley (6-8, 1-2).
CdM scored twice in the first inning. Brady Gadol walked to lead off the game. He stole second and scored on a throwing error on a bunt by Jackson McDonald. Van Sidebotham then singled McDonald in.
“I am really happy for this team,” said CdM Coach Kevin McCaffrey. “We challenged them yesterday to compete at all times. They came out today and played on their toes all afternoon. It really helps when your pitcher is throwing so well. Hogan was outstanding today.
“He had a good Fountain Valley team off balance all afternoon. He threw a complete game throwing 69 pitches. I’m also so pleased with the performance of Dennis Fitzpatrick. He played an amazing shortstop today. He must have had eight balls hit to him and he made all the plays.”
