Segerstrom High School’s girls basketball team defeated a pesky University squad at home, 48-35, in the Santa Ana Elks Classic Girls Basketball Tournament Tuesday night.
In the first minute of the game, Jaguars senior Stephanie Valenciano scored a basket giving her exactly 1,000 points for her career. The game was paused and Coach Shonyta Pouncey presented her with a commemorative basketball in a quick ceremony.
Segerstrom led just 24-20 at half, but pulled away in the second half to improve its record to 8-1.
Junior Abby Quero had 13 points and two three pointers while Valenciano and freshman power forward Kamila Floris each finished with 10 points for the Jaguars.
University (3-7) was led by senior point guard Ai Miyano (13 points and three 3-pointers) and senior center Julia Holmes (eight points, 11 rebounds and five blocks).
