Santa Ana Valley High School’s football team opened the CIF Division 12 playoffs Friday night with a 3-0 victory over Victor Valley at Victor Valley.
The only score of the game was a 38-yard field goal by Alonso Puga of Santa Ana Valley in the second quarter.
“We knew we were in for a tough game against a quick and athletic Victor Valley team,” said Santa Ana Valley Coach Alfredo Macias.
“Our defensive unit carried us through this game as they pitched a shutout. The defensive line and linebackers were stout all night pressuring the quarterback and stopping the run.
“Defensive back Luis Villanueva came up with the play of the night when he forced a fumble that our safety Kevin Andrade recovered in the final minutes of the fourth quarter.”
Santa Ana Valley (9-2) will host Hueneme (5-6) from Oxnard in the quarterfinals Friday night.
