Santa Ana High School’s football team won its fourth game in a row in the spring season, defeating Estancia 37-6 in an Orange Coast League game at Santa Ana Bowl Friday night.
It was senior night for the Saints.
“When we have things like senior night, we got a lot of things going on, we got to get our mental toughness better,” said Coach Charlie TeGantvoort. “We got to be able to focus because the team that we focused on and worried about the most is Santa Ana. If Santa Ana is right, then the game goes right. If Santa Ana is wrong, the game goes wrong.
“So we got to make sure we’re better and more mentally tough and we got to get better if we want to accomplish our ultimate goals.”

Senior quarterback Angel Vega, who transferred from Segerstrom High after the 2019 season, led the Saints by throwing two touchdown passes. He completed 12 of 17 passes for 190 yards, and tossed two touchdowns and an interception.
“We came out and executed our game plan in the first quarter,” Vega said. “After the first quarter, everything was getting sloppy, sloppy, sloppy and then all the penalties. We just got to clean it up and come back next week and be ready for Costa Mesa.”
Jason Costa was the Saints leading rusher with 121 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns. He also recorded an interception on defense.
“Beginning of the game, we drove really hard,” Costa said. “We executed and played our best in the beginning. We have a lot to work out.”
Dominick Madrid also had one rushing touchdown for Santa Ana. He also rushed for 91 yards on 10 carries. Anthony Gomez had seven catches for 93 yards and a TD and Isaac Larriva also hauled in a TD catch for the Saints. The 55-yard catch got the Saints scoring going in the first quarter of play. Larriva also had an interception on defense.
Estancia (1-3) was held to two field goals (21, and 35 yards, respectively) by Freddy Guzman. The Eagles had two touchdown runs by quarterback Lucas Pacheco nullified in the same second-quarter drive due to penalties.
Santa Ana jumped out to a 21-0 lead after one quarter and led 31-3 after three quarters.
The Saints will play the Costa Mesa Mustangs on the road next Friday April 9, while the Eagles will host the Laguna Beach Breakers.
