Rivals Santa Ana and Orange are meeting at the Santa Ana Bowl Friday to once again decide Orange Coast League title.
This year’s rematch was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. High school football was supposed to start in August, but delayed until March when most teams emarked on an abbreviated spring schedule. This will be the final game of the spring season with no CIF playoffs planned.
Both teams are undefeated at 5-0. Santa Ana, coached by Charlie TeGantvoort, is 2-0 in league play while Orange, coached by Robert Pedroza, is 1-0. The Panthers had their league game against Costa Mesa cancelled when the Mustangs were unable to field a team due to injuries.
Santa Ana is trying to avenge last year’s 57-13 loss to Orange at Chapman University.
There was a large turnout for that game. But attendance at Friday’s game in the spacious Santa Ana facility will be limited to family members due to current safety protocols.
