For the first time since 2010, the Santa Ana Valley boys soccer program reached a CIF final — and on a warm Saturday morning, the Falcons made sure they wouldn’t leave empty-handed.

Behind a dominant second-half performance and disciplined defense, Santa Ana Valley (19-2-3) defeated Esperanza 3-0 at a near-capacity Fred Kelly Stadium to capture the CIF Division 5 championship.

It marks the Falcons’ first CIF title since 2006 and their third overall (2004, 2006, 2026) under long-time head coach José Sánchez, who has led the program for more than 25 years.

Goals from José Muñoz (57th minute), Guillermo Vargas (65th), and Daniel Navarro (70th) sealed the victory — and earned Sánchez the celebratory cooler bath his players had promised.

“I don’t mind taking a nice cooler bath after a win like this,” Sánchez said with a smile. “The boys wanted to do that after we won the Orange League title, but I told them, ‘It wasn’t enough. Let’s win the CIF title and get me all wet.’ And they delivered today.

“We knew they would be tough defensively, and I expected that in the first half. We were hoping they would get tired in the second half and open up some space. I told the kids to take advantage and leave everything on the field because we don’t know when we’ll get back to this stage. It’s so difficult to be here. We’re very fortunate and blessed to win it.”

Both teams battled to a physical scoreless draw through the first half. But Valley broke through with relentless second-half pressure that limited Esperanza to only a few half-chances on the counterattack.

The breakthrough came 17 minutes into the second half when senior midfielder and captain Marvin Villela dribbled past multiple defenders and drove the ball to the end line.

Although Esperanza (9-9-6) initially appeared to contain the play, Muñoz capitalized on the rebound and fired a powerful shot into the lower right corner past goalkeeper Shane Cook.

“I think the nerves got to us at first — CIF final, big crowd,” Villela said. “But in the second half we woke up. We worked hard for this all season and we finished it. I wanted to get the goal myself, but I saw my teammate in the middle and wanted him to finish it.”

Valley doubled its lead in the 65th minute when a bobbled shot from Vargas deflected off an Esperanza defender and into the net for an own goal.

Just five minutes later, Navarro put the match out of reach, blasting a left-footed free kick from 25 yards out into the back of the net.

“Before the shot I was thinking we needed one more to put the game to bed,” Navarro said. “Now we’re CIF champs. It’s a team effort. Nothing can be singled out to just one player. We work together, fight for each other, and that’s how we won.”

Over the final minutes, Valley controlled possession and prevented any possibility of a late Esperanza rally.

“After the third goal, we felt confident,” Sánchez said. “I was very confident after the second one, but we did a great job controlling their counterattacks. In the final minutes, we managed the ball well and kept it on the ground.”

Santa Ana Valley now advances to the CIF State playoffs, with a first-round opponent to be determined.
