The Chargers led from the start and held a 30-16 lead at halftime before extending the margin in the third quarter by outscoring Godinez 16-8.
Junior forward Connor Collins scored 16 points and junior guard Jackie Kwok led Edison offensively, but Coach Rich Boyce was happy with a number of players, and enthused about the Chargers’ defensive effort.
“It was a good job, the guys on the bench I thought played well,” said Edison Coach Rich Boyce. “I thought Kyle (Boyce) gave us a bunch of rebounds and played hard defensively. I thought Luke (Serven) and Brad (Luna) did a great job of working on number one (Andrew Valdez).
“The offensive part was good but I thought Luke and Brad did a tremendous job on defense and Connor and Jackie offensively. Greg (Economos) off the bench, gave us a spark too. I would say it was a team win.”
Serven added eight points for the Chargers, who defeated Irvine 76-30 on Monday.
Valdez scored 12 points and Roger Aquino 11 points to lead Godinez which struggled from the outside. Joseph Lopez added eight points for the Grizzlies (2-1).
“They did good for two and a half quarters to try and stay with them, a very well coached team and a combination of being very talented and very well coached,” Godinez Coach Greg Coombs said of his team’s effort. “Our kids try hard. Offensively we had trouble scoring because of their size and physicality. They were able to take us out of some of our stuff and we had a little bit of trouble scoring.
“We hung in there at about 12 points for a long time and then stopped doing the other things defensively, but they’re a very good team and one of the things with this tournament is playing teams like that and it shows your weaknesses and that’s what you got to go work on.”
