The University of Washington commit did just that Friday night with a county and school record eight touchdown passes to lead the Sea Kings to a 57-20 victory over Downey in the season opener at Newport Harbor.
Garbers completed 24 of 29 passes for 491 yards, acording to CdM. That total is a school record, according to Coach Dan OShea. The touchdown passing total is a school and county record surpassing the previous record of seven, OShea added. Garbers threw seven touchdown passes in a 62-14 victory over Newport Harbor last season.
“It was a phenomenal night for him by utilizing our scheme, his weapons, his intelligence and our OL play to execute the quarterback position to perfection against a tremendous team, the Downey Vikings,” OShea told OC Sports Zone on Saturday.
Garbers came just short of the CIF record of nine. Robert De La Cruz of Cathedral threw nine touchdown passes in games in 1998 and 1999. Nine players have thrown eight TD passes, according to the CIF record book.
A number of other players contributed to the victory, OShea said.
Senior running back Riley Binnquist, in his first varsity start, was also outstanding, OShea said.
“The balance in the wide receiving corps was exactly what we want,” OShea said. “All four (Simon Hall, Bradley Schlomm, Mark Redman and John Humphreys) had huge nights.”
Redman has also committed to Washington while Humphreys comitted to Stanford.
