Calvary Chapel (10-0) finished 5-0 to claim the outright league title. Rancho Alamitos and Ocean View (both 3-2) are the other two CIF playoff automatic qualifiers. Estancia (6-4, 2-3) and Los Amigos (5-5, 2-3) could advance as at-large entries.
“We are excited for playoffs,” said Coach Jack McInally. “We aren’t sure what division we will be in, but we are excited for the next challenge. An undefeated season is not something that can ever be beaten, only tied. We are very proud of it, especially with the tough preseason and league schedule.”
McInally described Thursday’s contest as a “crazy game.”
“First drive we stop them, and then score on a fourth and 12 from the 30, Colin Wiles to Jorge Brito,” he said. “We then did an onside kick and recovered it by Daniel Nieves. We scored a couple plays later on a Jackson Stice touchdown run {to make it}16-0 in the first couple of minutes.
“We knew we need to get ahead of this team with how good of a run game they have. They were on the 2 yard line with just over a minute in the first half and they dove for the end zone, but Eli Sutherland stripped the ball, and Daniel Nieves scored a 101 yard fumble six.
“They cut the score down to three points in the fourth, but behind Garrett Lindsey we ran down the clock and scored to extend the lead to two scores.”
