The Panthers built a 46-0 halftime lead and went on to defeat the Vaqueros 60-14 in the final non-league game for both teams at Segerstrom.
“They came out ready to play and they took care of business tonight,” said Orange Coach Robert Pedroza.
Orange (4-1) scored 66 points against Canyon on Sept. 14 and 76 points last week vs. Westminster.
It was more of the same Thursday against Irvine (0-5).
Orange was led by Isacc Galvan, who rushed for 203 yards and one touchdown and quarterback Daylen Pedroza, who completed 9 of 12 passes for 199 yards. Pedroza also rushed for 82 yards and three touchdowns.
“We expected them to be our big guys this season and they have been performing this whole year so far, but now that pre-season is over, it’s time to get ready for league,” said Coach Pedroza said. ‘It’s going to be a great test every week and then get ready for the playoffs.”
Pedroza was also happy with the Panthers defense which had a shutout until Irvine’s Nathaniel Choi scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Beck Moss connected with Jacob Sears on a 3-yard TD pass with 3:46 remaining to account for the other score by Irvine.
“Our kids fly around, they’re physical and it’s fun to watch,” Pedroza said. “Christopher Quiroga, our middle backer and Nathan Cook and Jeremiah Rivera up front (played well) and they had one of the leading receivers in the county (Kade Zimmerman) and our dbs did a great job. Isac Adetoye had a great game and held him to zero catches until we replaced him. I thought our secondary did a great job. They’re a great passing team and our secondary came to play.”
Daylen Pedroza (no relation to the head coach) set the tone when he scampered 53 yards on the second play from scrimmage for a score. He later scored from 3 yards out.
Then, he connected with Andrew Andrade on a 15-yard TD pass and scored again on a 13-yard TD run. Later in the second quarter, he hooked up with Adetoye on a 21-yard TD pass. Galvan’s 31-yard TD run made it 46-0.
Both coaches agreed to play with a running clock in third quarter and Orange padded its lead.
Andrade scored on a 5-yard TD run and Rivera had a 2-yard TD run in the third quarter.
“We just came out and did our job,” Pedroza, the quarterback said. “We have that mentality to come out and beat our opponent every play and it paid off today.”
“We have the mindset every week to dominate our opponent,” Andrade said. “We just get ready by the best coaching staff in the county and we just play Panther football. I got two touchdowns today and it just feels great today. I just have to say thank you to my quarterback and my line for making it happen.”
“Our line stepped up big time,” added Galvan. “They made holes for me and I just ran through them.”
Irvine was led by Moss, who passes for 113 yards, most of it in the second half. Zimmerman wound up with two catches for 60 yards and Jacob Sears had four for 36.
“We knew it was going to be difficult,” said Irvine Coach Tom Ricci. “Whenever you play a team that is putting up 76 against other teams, you’re concerned about your well being of your kids. We were going to run our defense and run our offense and go ahead and continue to improve and prepare for Woodbridge. Our goal was to prepare for Woodbridge.
“We knew going in it was going to be a track meet; they have some seriously talented individuals and it definitely showed. We had some kids who kind of rose to the occasion, I thought, we just didn’t have enough and our goal is to find those guys and keep plugging them in until we have enough.”
