A proposal to add girls flag football beginning in the Fall of 2023 was passed by the CIF Southern Section Council Thursday by a vote of 61-26 with two abstaining according to CIF Assistant Commissioner Thom Simmons.
The measure now goes on to the state level for a first reading next Friday and then a full vote by all 10 sections and the allied organizations at the state level will be taken in February, Simmons added.
It will be up to individual schools to determine if they want to add the sport, CIF Commissioner Rob Wigod said in an interview with OC Sports Zone in August.
One scenario has schools having the girls flag football 7-on-7 games on the same night as boys football games.
“We would need 20 percent of our member schools to field teams in girls flag football and when we reach that threshold, we would be able to conduct a Southern Section championship in that sport,” Wigod said.
