El Dorado High School’s boys basketball team, coached by Ryan Mounce, captured the title of the 28th annual Gary Raya Classic Saturday defeating league rival Yorba Linda 66-63.
The Hawks overcame an early 16-point deficit. Marcelo Gonzalez led the way with six 3-pointers and 23 points.
Caleb Hendrix added 13 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds and was selected tourney MVP.
The Hawks opened the tourney defeating Costa Mesa on Monday 58-43 behind senior Brian Kee’s 19 points, then defeated a tough Capo Valley team in overtime 61-56 Tuesday behind Kee’s 16-point effort.
On Thursday, El Dorado beat Laguna Beach 69-60. Leading the way was junior Eli Rodarte, who had 21 points.Â
This put El Dorado in the finals with rival Yorba Linda, which defeated Chaparral, Trabuco Hills and Bonita.Â
The Hawks (7-2 return three seniors this year.Â
“Only two players played more than 15 minutes a game last season (Barker and Hendrix),” Mounce said. “Expectations are low going into this season but the ability to do something special is soaring high.”
