Fountain Valley, Orange and Irvine among OC teams in Pony Bronco regional

Youth baseball teams from Orange County, including Fountain Valley and Olive Orange, will be competing in the Pony Bronco 12-and-under regional beginning Wednesday in Placentia.

The games will be held on two fields at the Placentia Champions Sports Complex, 505 S. Jefferson St.

Fountain Valley captured the sectional tournament and Orange was second in the sectional tournament held at Harvard Park in Irvine. Fountain Valley defeated Orange 12-2 in the championship game.

Other teams in the tournament are Irvine, Newport Harbor, South Bay, Santa Ana, Olive Green, Placentia, East Long Beach, John Mendez and Torrance. There are two teams from Olive Pony.

Irvine advanced to the tournament by finishing as the runner-up runner-up at the East Long Beach District Tournament, earning an auto-bye to the regionals, according to Irvine Pony President JD Hardin. Irvine reached the finals, losing to East Long Beach 12-2. The team advanced to the finals with a 10-4 victory over Los Alamitos.

Opening round schedule, Wednesday, July 9:

Irvine vs. Fountain Valley, March field, 5 p.m.; Newport Harbor vs. South Bay, 7 p.m., March field; Santa Ana vs. Olive Green, 5:15 p.m., Jensen field.

Thursday, July 10:

Winner of Irvine-Fountain Valley vs. Placentia, 5 p.m., March field; Newport Harbor-South Bay winner vs. Olive Orange, 7 p.m. March field; Santa Ana-Olive Green winner vs. East Long Beach, 7:15 p.m., Jensen field; John Mendez vs. Torrance, 7:15 p.m., Jensen field.

The tournament continues on Saturday, July 12 and Sunday, July 13. First games on Saturday and Sunday will be 9 a.m. The championship is scheduled for Monday, July 14.

The top three seeds advance to the super regionals in Corona July 17-22.
