Former Major Leaguer Chris Gomez to lead Pacifica Christian baseball program in 2022

Former Major League baseball player Chris Gomez will guide the new Pacifica Christian High School varsity baseball program, which will launch play in the spring of 2022, according to Athletic Director Brandon Gonzalez.

The team will play its home games at Dean Harvey Field at Vanguard University, Gonzalez said. It will be the 22nd varsity program for the school.

Gonzalez was a first team All-American at Long Beach State and was drafted in the third round of the 1992 Major League Draft by the Detroit Tigers. He went on to play for 15 years in the Major Leagues and was the starting shortstop for the San Diego Padres in the 1998 World Series.

Gomez is currently an assistant coach at Corona del Mar and will continue his duties during the upcoming season. Before that, he was an assistant coach at Sage Hill High School and the team captured a CIF title in 2016.

“I am extremely excited to have Chris joining our coaching staff at Pacifica Christian High School,” Gonzalez said.

“Chris brings a true desire to grow, develop, and foster meaningful wholesome experiences for our student-athletes and our future baseball players. He also understands our school’s culture and mission, who we are, and what we are trying to accomplish as an institution and athletic department.”
