Cypress tops Mater Dei 2-1; Uni defeats Portola but Bulldogs’ King strikes out 16

Cypress High’s baseball team, ranked No. 1 in CIF Division 1, captured its second straight victory at the Boras Classic, defeating Mater Dei 2-1 in eight innings Thursday at Mater Dei.

The Centurions (15-2) move on to face Orange Lutheran in the consolation championship game Friday at 6 p.m. at Mater Dei. Orange Lutheran was ranked second in this week’s CIF Division 1 poll.

Tyler Chaffee pitched a complete game, going eight innings. He also drove in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Cameron Repetti had a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to tie the game, according to Cypress Coach John Weber.

Also Thursday:

University 2, Portola 1: University moved into fourth place in the Pacific Coast League with the win. However, the star of the game was Portola’s junior pitcher Jamison King, who had 16 strikeouts in seven innings.

Nick Wetzel was 1 for 3 with a double and a run scored to lead Uni. Adam Axtell pitched five innings and allowed one earned run and scored the winning run.

Alex Qu was 1 for 3 with a double and drove in the winning run. Jose Rodriguez pitched two innings in relief to get the win.

“Jamison King was fantastic today,” said University Coach Michael Thompson. “He pitched a really good game. That was the type of pitcher’s duel we anticipated as Axtell only gave up three hits and held Portola for five innings pitching out of some really tough spots.

“It was great to see Alex come up with that big double in the seventh. He had struck out twice and jumped on the first pitch to give us the lead.”

“We are really making some huge strides as a team and really looking forward to watching these guys compete down the stretch.”

Both Portola (4-11, 1-8) and University (7-9, 4-5 had four hits.
