Cypress High School’s standout senior guard Ryan Gov committed this week to play college basketball next season for Azusa Pacific University, according to Centurions Coach Derek Mitchell.

“I am so proud of Ryan,” Mitchell said. “He came in with a goal of taking his game to the next level, and he was able to accomplish it. He is one of the most skilled and hardest workers that have come through the Cypress program. He is definitely one of the top players to ever put on a Cypress uniform. He is an inspiration to anyone who has ever been considered an underdog.”

The 5-11 Gov is averaging about 18 points and 4.5 assists this season.

“When people look at Ryan, he won’t pass the eye test, but he is a dawg,” Mitchell said. “I have been lucky to coach him the past four years and cannot wait to see him showcase his talent at the next level.  APU is getting someone who will positively impact their program for the next four years.”

Gov said he was also considering Chapman University and Cal Lutheran.

“The coaches are really good people off the court and really push their players to be better men not just players,” Gov said of his decision to commit with Azusa Pacific. “It just felt like the right fit the first game I watched. With the pieces they already have I think it was the perfect fit for me the way that I play.”

It been one of Gov’s goals to play at the next level.

“It’s something i’ve really put my mind to since I was little kid,” he said. “Playing at the next level has always been a goal of mine and when people say you never know who’s watching it’s true so play every game like someone’s watching.”

He’s already thought about next season.

“My ability to just be a true point guard, get my teammates involved, and also score on all three levels. I think my feel for the game will translate to the next level,” Gov said.
