Cypress High’s boys basketball team turned back a challenge from Beverly Hills and captured an 81-78 victory in the opening round of the CIF 2AA playoffs at Cypress Tuesday night.
Anthony Tello scored 27 points and made three 3-pointers, Jared Brown scored 18 points and hit three 3-pointers and Christian Kim had 11 points to lead Cypress (27-2).
The Centurions advance into the quarterfinals Thursday night on the road against Notre Dame Riverside.
Cypress trailed by nine points twice and was able to come back.
“I’m really proud of our guys for not giving up,” said Cypress Coach Derek Mitchell. “They could have folded, but our seniors would not let us lose tonight. Beverly Hills is a great team, they were on open watch for a reason. Notre Dame, Riverside is our next opponent and they are a huge obstacle standing in front of us. We have to cut down on the turnovers and stop fouling to have any sort of chance.”

Troy 56, Tesoro 55: The Warriors 18-12) knocked off the No. 2 seeded Tesoro team in the 2A division opener at Tesoro. Cole Yauncey led Troy with 21 points and 14 rebounds and Trevor Seesemann added 12 points.
Tesoro (19-7) was led by Noah Honetschlager with 15 points, Ty Broughton with 11 and Kaden Garrett with 10 points.
Troy hosts Crean Lutheran Thursday night in the quarterfinals.
Pacifica Christian 54, Burroughs Ridgecrest 51: The Tritons advance into the 4AA quarterfinals Thursday night. Solomon Davis scored 23 points and had 15 rebounds and Josh Sims scored 11 points for Pacifica Christian (21-7).
Temecula Valley 70, Newport Harbor 61: Robbie Spooner had 27 points and Dayne Chalmers 13 points to lead Newport Harbor, one of four Surf League champions. The Sailors finished 25-5.
Capistrano Valley Christian 61, Redlands 54: Capo Valley Christian moves on to the quarterfinals with the victory. Festus Ndumanya scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Luke Powell had 18 points and Ricky Petronis had 11 points, five rebounds and a game saving block.
