Costa Mesa’s boys basketball team opened the CIF 5AA Southern California Regional Tuesday night with a 59-46 victory over Palisades, recording its first victory in regional play.
Senior Gio Quero scored 20 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the fifth-seeded Mustangs (16-9). Nathan Shipper had 15 points and Aden Spallone 12 points to lead Costa Mesa, which advances into the second round Thursday.
Costa Mesa finished as the CIF 5AA runner-up last week.
ETIWANDA 71, MATER DEI 62: The sixth-seeded Monarchs lost in the opening round of the open division regional Tuesday night. Harrison Hornery scored 24 points, grabbed eight rebounds, had three assists and two steals and Nick Davidson had 20 points and nine rebounds to lead the Monarchs (27-4).
Mater Dei trailed 30-26 at halftime to third seeded Etiwanda.
