OC Sports Zone: Community First

CIF PLAYOFFS: University, Tustin, Estancia, JSerra, Cypress, Foothill and El Dorado win

UNIVERSITY 85, SAN MARINO 80: University, which got into the CIF 4AA playoffs as the fourth place team from the Pacific Coast League, captured a victory on the road Friday night against No. 2-seeded San Marino (20-4). Ryan Lee hit a 3-pointer and scored on a break-away basket in the last two seconds for the Trojans.

Joseph Purser led University (13-15) with 30 points and four assists. Ali Wahedi, who missed just one field goal all night and scored 27 points and had five assists.

Jad Hajj-Shehaddeh had 11 points and 13 rebounds. Nathaneo Johnson had 10 rebounds before fouling out. The Trojans never trailed in the game.

TUSTIN 43, PALM DESERT 33: The Tillers (21-8) won in the opening round of the CIF 3AA playoffs at Tustin. Tustin was led by Eli Nyeazi, who scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds and Wasi Khan, who had 10 points and five assists.

ESTANCIA 72, ACADEMY OF CAREER AND EXPLORATION 31: The Eagles (18-11) won their CIF 5AA playoff opener Friday. James De La O had 16 points, Reef Johnson 15 and Jaedon Hose-Shea 10 points.

JSERRA 63, OAK PARK 44: The Lions (16-9) captured a CIF Division 1 playoff victory Friday night. Dane Persek scored 19 points, Robert Diaz had 15 points to lead the Lions.

CYPRESS 48, MAYFAIR 47: The Centurions pulled off an upset on the road Friday night in the CIF 2AA playoffs.

Kody Papke led the Centurions with 13 points and eight rebounds. Jonah Kim finished 13 points and six rebounds, for Cypress (16-12) which battled back from a four-point halftime deficit.

“I’m really proud of our guys, we grinded out a defensive battle,” said Cypress Coach Derek Mitchell. “Coach (Tony) Davis is such a good coach, and this one finally went our way. We rebounded well as team. That was key, limiting them to one shot.”

Cypress will host No. 3 Village Christian Tuesday.

FOOTHILL 64, PALM SPRINGS 41: Jacob Horton scored 17 points, Cruz Billings had 10 points and 11 assists and Carlo Billings 15 points and seven rebounds to lead fourth-seeded Foothill (25-2) to a CIF 2AA playoff victory.
