CIF PLAYOFFS: Laguna Hills and Fountain Valley advance (final scores)

LAGUNA HILLS 3, CITRUS HILL 2: It was the last day of school for underclassmen and graduation and grad night for the Laguna Hills seniors, but the team remained focused and captured a first-round CIF Division 5 playoff victory on the road Thursday.

Mike Burke pitched a complete game, allowing two earned runs to get the win. He was also 1 for 2 with an RBI and a bunt base hit.

Tyler Eisenberg was 1 for 3 with a two run single for the Hawks,

“Mike Burke gave us a big time performance on the bump,” said Laguna Hills Coach Drew Hillman. “Tyler Eisenberg had a clutch two-RBI single in the sixth to tie the game. I am really proud of how our games overcame some adversity with some tough calls on the road and found a way to get the win.”

Laguna Hills (18-8) will face Walnut in the next round Tuesday.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY 6, DON LUGO 5: The Barons (16-13) captured a road victory in their CIF Division 3 opener. Ryan Sullivan had an RBI single in the seventh and Blake Wentz closed out the game to get the victory.

The Barons will host Chino Tuesday in the second round.

CHINO HILLS 6, IRVINE 2: Coach Gabiel Cota’s team lost their CIF Divison 3 playoff opener on the road.

“Today was a big day, for our seniors especially,” Cota said. “Graduation and a CIF playoff game in the same day is a lot, but our boys battled like always. We competed, but were shut down by a good pitcher. We competed right up until the end loading the bases on the seventh.

“This group has battled through so much adversity. I am so proud of them having never given up hope. This group of seniors is my first as a head coach, and I am so happy of the young men they have all grown in to. I’m excited for their future and can’t wait to see what they have in store.
