DIVISION 3AA

SAGE HILL 43, TUSTIN 39 (OT): In a well-played, defensive-minded quarterfinal matchup, Sage Hill escaped at home with an overtime victory over Tustin. Tustin led much of the way leading by three after the first quarter, five at half and seven after three quarters.

Down 10-7 after the first quarter, the Lightning were able to knot the score at 12 all in the second quarter and again at 22 all in the third quarter.

Not until there were three minutes to play in regulation was Sage Hill able to eke out a 35-34 lead. Tustin’s defense was able to limit Sage Hill’s two go-to guys to just five field goals the entire game. One, however, was crucial as sophomore Tre Cradle knotted the score on a drive to the bucket with about six seconds in regulation to tie the score at 37 apiece.

In overtime, senior captain guard James Karahalios hit a game-winning jump shot to give Sage Hill a 41-39 lead with under three seconds to play. Sophomore guard Charles Gomez stole the inbounds pass, was fouled and made a pair of free throws to secure the win for Sage Hill.

For Sage Hill (17-8), Karahalios was the leading scorer with 16 points, primarily on drives to the bucket. He also had five rebounds. Senior center Jackson Cryst was a force to be reckoned with collecting a double double (11 points and 10 rebounds) to go along with five blocks. Gomez had seven points and four steals off the bench while Cradle had four points and eight rebounds.

Sage’s second half comeback was fueled by a 22-12 rebound advantage after halftime and limiting Tustin to making just seven of 30 field goals (23 percent) at the same time.

Tustin (24-7) was led by senior guard Daniel Molina with 11 points and three 3-pointers. Senior forwards Yuri Klines (nine points) and Terrelle Morales (six points) were key contributors. Senior point guard Ethan Contreras had six points and five assists while sophomore center Taven Epps had two points and 11 rebounds as a reserve.

Sage Hill will host San Gabriel Academy Friday in the semifinals.
