Corona del Mar’s baseball team defeated Capistrano Valley Christian 9-0 Wednesday in a non-league game at CdM behind a dominant performance from starting pitcher Will Chavez.

Chavez (3-0) pitched five innings, allowing only two hits and striking out six to record the win, according to Coach Kevin McCaffrey.

CVCS threatened in both the first and second innings with leadoff doubles. Chavez was able to pitch out of the jam in both innings.

The Sea Kings (4-2) opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning when they put up five runs.

JJ Haley drove in Stevie Jones with a single to start the scoring. Brady Zenz then drove in two runs to make it 3-0. Cason Yarnall grounded into a fielder’s choice that scored Zenz. Chavez then scored on a passed ball to make it 5-0.

JJ Haley led off the fourth inning with a single followed by a walk to Jack Phillips. Zenz then doubled down the left field line to score Haley. Jack Phillips scored on a wild pitch and Zenz scored on an RBI single from Chavez to make it 8-0.

The Sea Kings scored again in the fifth inning on a Sacrifice fly by Phillips that scored Charlie Kaster.

“Will did everything for us today,” McCaffrey said. “He was really good on the mound against a very good hitting and physical team. To hold that team to two hits says a lot about how well he threw the ball today. Will also led us offensively going 3 for 4. I am so proud of how he competed today. JJ Haley and Brady Zenz also had big games for us at the plate.”

CdM and CVCS (4-5) play again Friday at 3:15 p.m. at San Juan Sports Park.
