Corona del Mar High School’s baseball team opened the three-game Battle of the Bay series with a 3-2 victory over Newport Harbor Tuesday afternoon at Newport Harbor.
Junior Nick Salmon threw a complete game two-hitter to record his first win of the season. Salmon (1-0) was also 1 for 3 with a double off the center field fence. Sophomore Jackson McDonald led the way offensively going 2 for 2 with a walk and run scored on the day.
“I am so proud of Nick Salmon,” said CdM Coach Kevin McCaffrey. “He has shown he can be really good, and he put it all together today. He had command of all pitches. He really competed all day. Nick put the team on his back and shut down a good Newport team. “
The second game of the series will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at CdM. The teams also play Friday at Orange Coast College at 3 p.m.
Both teams are 3-3 overall.
