CdM and Marina baseball teams rally to capture tournament victories

Corona del Mar’s baseball team improved its record to 3-2 overall with an 8-5 victory over Paramount Tuesday afternoon in the Newport Elks Tournament.

The game was a continuation of Saturday’s game that was suspended in the top of the third inning because of rain with the Sea Kings trailing 3-2, according to CdM Coach Kevin McCaffrey.

Nico DiFerdinando was 2 for 3. Max Lane, Kieran Sidebotham and Will Butler all doubled for CdM, which is 2-1 in the tournament. Sidebotham had two RBI.

Ryan Chambliss went 6 2/3 innings on the mound to get the victory.

CdM continues tournament play Wednesday at Santa Fe.

Marina 3, Dana Hills 2: The Vikings rallied Tuesday to capture a win and advance into the semifinals of the Loara Tournament.

Dana Hills had not allowed a run in the first 20 innings of the tournament with shutouts against Cypress and Dana Hills and then six shutout innings against Marina.

The Dolphins scored runs in the fourth and seventh innings before Marina rallied.

Junior relief pitcher, Connor Wylde singled to right field. Team captains, David Mashburn (3-for-4, run, RBI and a double) and Rocco Peppi followed with a pair of doubles to tie the game.  After an intentional walk to Lucas Iorgulescu, Trevor Lanksbury singled to load the bases, setting the table for Gavin Langer.

Langer’s walk off, bases loaded single atoned for an earlier error he made which allowed a run to score and sent the Vikings to the semifinals. Connor Wylde got the win in relief, his first as a varsity pitcher.
