Capistrano Valley junior receiver Jake Muller has committed to play football at California Berkeley, he announced on Twitter last week.
“We are extremely happy for Jake and his family on their commitment to Cal,” said first year Coach Sean Curtis. “I think it is a great fit for both Jake and the Golden Bears because of what he does on the field and in the classroom. Jake will be one of our top playmakers in 2019.
“He is all of 6-5 and weighs about 225 pounds. Used primarily as a receiver in the past, he runs great routes, catches the ball exceptionally well, and has a lot of athleticism for his size. We look forward to using him in some of our tight-end sets and also being able to split him out at receiver without changing personnel groups. I think that is what got the attention of the Cal coaching staff and a lot of the schools that came through in the spring. We are looking forward to having him play a critical role in our offense next season.”
Muller, in his tweet, said, “thank you to all my family and coaches who believed in me. Go Bears.”
Curtis, the Capo Valle Coach, is preparing for his first year leading the Cougars.
“Capo is a special place,” Curtis said. “I took the job knowing that I had some big shoes to fill. Coach (Ernie) Bucher and his staff did a lot of great things. On top of that, there is a lot of strong tradition here. This school has been around for a long time.
“A lot of the alumni have reached out and the response has been incredibly positive. Everyone seems on board with the direction we are headed. The administration has been awesome in supporting me in my goals to update the facilities. We currently have two projects going with a new turf field and new varsity team rooms. We also have plans for a new weight room and upgrades to the football stadium and coach’s offices.”
Curtis said he has been wanting to be a head coach.
“I know I don’t have all the answers but this is something I’ve been aspiring to do for a while now,” he said. “It’s been a blast putting my own spin on things. I feel like we’ve put together a great staff. There is a good mix of guys that came on with me and some that stayed on board. Above all that, I love the attitude and mindset of the players in the program. They work hard and are used to winning a lot of football games. Everyone is excited about football here and I’m a pretty passionate person so I feel like it’s a great match.”
