Calvary Chapel High School boys basketball coach Jon Hughes said Wednesday he has stepped down after three seasons to become the head coach for the school’s girls basketball program.

Hughes, who continues as athletic director, led the Eagles to the CIF 5AA title in 2021, the first for the program, and guided the team to two consecutive Orange Coast League championships.

“I will be stepping down as boys coach and turning the program over to my assistant James Larson,” Hughes said. “The girls team has not had any consistency in coaching so I will be moving over to be the head coach. I am hopeful to grow the program like we did the boys.”

Hughes will replace Mike Galindo, who guided the program the last two years. Calvary Chapel’s girls team was 16-3 last season and captured the league title with a 10-0 record.

Hughes said he is proud of what the boys team accomplished. The team was undefeated in league play the last two years, finishing 22-8 overall this past season. The Eagles lost to Bishop Amat 52-49 in the second round of the CIF 3A playoffs.

“To see the boys grow as a team and believe from the outset that if they worked hard they could win a CIF title was amazing to sit back and watch,” Hughes said. “I loved the three years I spent with that group and thankful for the opportunity to lead such great young men of character.”
