Beckman and Woodbridge girls basketball teams meet in PCL playoff for third place

University’s girls basketball team, which had already won the Pacific Coast League title, defeated Woodbridge 62-49 Thursday night in the league finale at Woodbridge.

Claire Kawata scored 19 points, Giulia Roy had 17 points and Aryn Press 13 points to lead the Trojans (14-14, 9-1).

Woodbridge (16-11, 6-4) winds up tied with Beckman (16-9, 6-4) for the third and the final CIF playoff berth. The Warriors and Patriots will meet Friday at 5 p.m. at Beckman for third place.

“A couple weeks ago we were sitting tied for first with a 6-1 record. Right before our second Beckman game we lost Kathleen Wasserman to injury,” said Woodbridge Coach Keith Clarkson.

“She had just came of her season high (and tied her career high) in points scoring 19 points vs Irvine. Since that point we have been shifting people around and trying to find that chemistry we had in early January. We have since dropped three straight and are currently 6-4 tied with Beckman for third.

“The winner of tonight’s game will receive the final guaranteed playoff spot into CIF. We plan to petition for an at large playoff spot if the outcome goes against us.”

Also on Thursday, Portola locked up second place in the league defeating Irvine 44-42.

Donia Maymoun scored 14 points and Jadyn Zdanavage 11 points to lead Portola (17-8, 7-3).

Irvine (9-18, 2-8) was led by Lika Amino with 14 points and Sabrina Lomri with 11 points.
