OC Sports Zone: Community First

A look at one of the busiest weeks of the year for CIF Southern Section sports

It’s a very busy week ahead for CIF Southern Section as playoffs continue in girls and boys basketball, lacrosse and other sports and start up in baseball and softball.

CIF Southern Section Commissioner Rob Wigod provided a preview of what’s ahead.

Baseball, seven divisions: Wild card Tuesday/Wednesday; first round on Thursday/Friday. 

Boys/girls basketball – open division: Pool play games two and three with boys Tuesday and Friday, girls Wednesday and Saturday, 

Boys basketball: nine divisions, quarterfinals Tuesday and semifinals Friday. 

Girls basketball: nine divisions: quarterfinals Wednesday and semifinals Saturday, 

Boys golf, seven divisions: Individual regionals at three sites, two Tuesday, one Wednesday.

Girls golf, four divisions: individual regionals at 2 sites Wedneday.

Boys lacrosse, three divisions: Quarterfinals in Divisions 1 and 2 Tuesday, semifinals on Friday. Division 3 semifinals Wedneday and championship final on Friday. 

Girls lacrosse, three divisions: Quarterfinals in Divisions 1 and 2 Wednesday, semifinals on Saturday. Division 3 Semifinals Wednesday and championship final on Saturday. 

Softball, seven divisions: Wild card Tuesday. First round on Thursday, second round on Saturday. 

Boys/girls track and field, four divisions: Prelims at four sites on Saturday. 

Boys volleyball, six divisions: Championship finals in all divisions on Saturday. 

Boys dual meet wrestling, six divisions: Semifinals Tuesday and championship finals in all divisions on Saturday. 

Girls dual meet wrestling, one division Quarterfinals Tuesday, semifinals on Saturday. 

Wigod said he was pleased to see how the playoffs have been going.

“I have had the opportunity to attend some of our recently completed championships,” he said. “To see the joy and excitement of our student-athletes as they compete at the highest level is something that I know we all appreciate now more than ever. I am so grateful to our student-athletes, coaches, athletic directors and principals for their hard work, dedication and commitment toward making it all happen. I look forward to seeing more of the same in the coming weeks.”
