The Orange County Athletic Directors Association announced Saturday that Xolani Hodel, a four-sport letterwinner at Huntington Beach High School and John Humphreys, a football standout at Corona del Mar, have been named the Orange County athletes of the year.
The announcement was made by Nick Canzone, athletic director at Segerstrom.
Humphreys, a wide receiver on CdM’s CIF Division 3 title, and state championship football team, received the 2020 Ken Fagans Orange County Male Athlete of the Year award. He is the CIF Southern Section record holder in receptions and CIF and state record holder in receiving touchdowns, according to Fairmont Prep Athletic Director Mark Alves, one of the narrators on a slide show honoring athletes.
The Sea Kings were 16-0. Humphreys, who also played basketball, will be going to Stanford on a football scholarship.
CdM’s football program, led by Coach Dan O’Shea, sent out a note on Twitter Saturday: “CdM football, along with our entire community, celebrates this most deserving honor for our own John Humphreys….a phenomenal honor for a most exceptional young man.”
Hodel received the 2020 Margaret Davis Orange County Female Athlete of the Year award.
Hodel was a basketball, soccer, volleyball and track and field star with the Oilers, according to Brea Olinda Girls Athletic Director Jill Matyuch. In four years of track, she was a CIF finalist in the high jump and won the league championship in 2018 and 2019. Hodel was also a three-time all-league volleyball player and was named all-county by the Orange County Register. Hodel is headed to Stanford in the fall.
The association has been running profiles of the league MVPS throughout the past two weeks, Canzone said.
