San Juan Hills High School basketball star Adam Weingard has committed to play college basketball at Lake Forest College on Chicago’s North Shore, his father Jeffrey said in an Email.
The 6-5 Weingard was a first team all-league Sea View League player this year and a second team all-league player last season. He was selected to play in the Orange County all-star basketball game.
Weingard played basketball at Tesoro in his first two years before transferring to San Juan Hills. He helped San Juan Hills finish 5-3 in the Sea View League in a tie for second place with Dana Hills this past season behind league champion Tesoro.
San Juan Hills Coach Jason Efstathiou said Weingard had quite an impact.
“Adam was an absolutely awesome player to coach, a great young man with a fantastic attitude and also an amazing leader on and off the court,” the coach said. “Adam was not only our leading scorer and rebounder but he was also our most vocal team member. He was a great extension of the coaches in communicating what we needed to happen.”
Weingard was the team captain his junior and senior years and was also named the team MVP both seasons. He was also a scholar athlete with a 4.5 GPA.
Coach Efstathiou fondly recalls Weingard’s performance against Cerritos in the CIF playoffs.
“He put together probably the best quarter I have ever seen in high school thus far,” the coach said. “He scored 30 points in the game but 18 alone in the fourth quarter to almost lead our team to a comeback victory. In that game by the way, he played point guard for us as our starting point guard and back up point guard were both out with injury and illness. Just further evidence that Adam was willing to do whatever we needed to win and was also capable of doing whatever we needed.”
Weingard also got into the record books.
“In his two years as a varsity member of San Juan Hills Adam set a single season rebounding record of 199 rebounds in a season and also tied for second for most points in a regular season game with 34,” the coach said.
“On a personal note I am so happy and lucky to have coached Adam. He is an excellent young man and one of the players that I have enjoyed coaching the most during my tenure. Adam made me a better coach and inspired me to be a better coach.
“We got along great always and he has an amazing family with great supportive parents and it is beautiful to see his accomplishments being recognized and I’m so excited to watch him play at the next level. His next coaches are going to be very happy with what they are getting in Adam.”
Weingard is a Northwest Indiana native. He will study business and marketing at Lake Forest College, his father said.
