Coach Mike Gerakos’ retirement didn’t last too long.
The former University High head baseball coach retired at the end of last season. But he hinted at the time he might be back coaching somewhere.
That place wound up being nearby Corona del Mar High School, where first year Corona del Mar Coach Kevin McCaffrey signed Gerakos up to be his pitching coach. (To read more about his decision, please click here)
The two worked together when McCaffrey was an assistant coach at University.
“I’m having a lot of fun with these guys and a lot of fun with Mike Gerakos and the coaching staff,” McCaffrey said Wednesday.
“He means everything, he’s my mentor. I’ve worked with him 14 years now and anything he says is gold. The guy is absolutely amazing and the relationships he has with these kids is so neat and you learn something from him every day. I know the kids are learning stuff from him and I still learn stuff from him every single day.”
McCaffrey said he’s pleased he was able to convince Gerakos, the former UC Irvine baseball coach, to be a Sea King.
“He could have gone anywhere he wanted and when he says ‘Kevin, we started something pretty special (at University) I want to finish it with you,’ it means a lot. To have a guy that caliber come with you means everything to me.”
CdM is off to a 7-2-1 start and is ranked seventh in this week’s CIF Division 2 poll. The Sea Kings open Wave League play Friday at Marina.
