Beckman’s girls volleyball team has started the season on a successful note, compiling a 19-6 overall record and earning a number 40 ranking in the first CIF pollv released earlier this week.
The ranking puts Beckman at one of the highest ranked teams in Orange County.
“We have started pretty strong,” said Coach Darin McBain. “Obviously, we have been gearing up for league play, hoping to get off to a better start than we did last season.
“We are confident that this year will be different. We would love to find ourselves in a fight for the league championship in four weeks.”
Leading the way for Beckman has been junior middle blocker Brooklyn Hamilton.
“She has improved immensely and is already close to breaking our all-time single-season blocking record,” McBain said. “She had nine blocks in our four-set win over Foothill a few weeks back.
“Captains Mady Stephenson {a sophomore outside hitter} and Kylie Kim {a senior middle blocker} have done a great job as well. Kylie is one of our most consistent players and Mady anchors our serve receive and defense.
“We also have a trio of setters that each have their strengths and a handful of defensive specialists that would start just about anywhere.”
McBain said he’s been enjoying coaching the team.
“With our lack of size, we rely on our defense and ball control to win matches,” he said. “The level of effort and energy from this group makes it a fun team to coach.”
Beckman began South Coast League play Thursday night.
