Capistrano Valley’s annual mom’s football camp on campus this month attracted nearly 80 participants, one of the biggest turnouts, according to Coach Sean Curtis.

“It’s one of our favorite days of the year. This is our annual mom’s camp, but it ends up being so much more,” Curtis said.

“We have grandmothers, sisters and aunts come out to experience what it takes to be a football player in our program. We start in the classroom with a football 101 course covering some basic rules and strategy behind the game.

“We want them to walk away with a few things that might help them understand the game better. Then we head to the weight room for a light workout and show them what it looks like to be in that environment. Finally, we finish on the field with some individual drills including throwing, catching, tackling and hitting the sled.”

The camp also allowed moms to have a chance to tackle their son in a safety mat, according to Curtis.

“Our players and coaches do a great job of keeping it light and fun,” Curtis said. “It’s great to see so many of the moms come back year after year as their kids go through the program. We always say that we are family at Capo and getting a chance to do this with these women is important to us. We want to offer a fun experience for them and get them excited about the season. We could not do what we do without them.”
