NEWPORT HARBOR 8, AQUINAS 0: Newport Harbor erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the second inning and went on to defeat Aquinas at home in the quarterfinal round of the CIF Division 2 baseball playoffs Friday.

Newport Harbor (22-9) plays at Ganesha (25-3-1) Tuesday in the semifinals.

Newport Harbor’s starting pitcher Keaton Anderson threw a complete game shutout giving up only three hits while walking one in seven innings. Anderson, a junior, also had five strikeouts.

Newport Harbor’s junior left fielder Noah Whittaker went 2 for 3 with two singles including an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning that jump-started the Sailor offense.

Senior center fielder Gavin Guy kept the scoring going in the bottom of the second for Newport with a three RBI double with the bases loaded making the score 5-0 which forced Aquinas (21-10) to change pitchers.

The pitching change by Aquinas proved to be unsuccessful as Newport Harbor’s junior shortstop Grant Horsley gave the Sailors a huge boost offensively with his three run home run making the score 8-0 to finish the second inning.

The eight runs scored in the bottom of the second by Newport Harbor would end up being the only runs scored for both teams.
