Laguna Hills boys basketball team made history Friday night.
The Hawks, coached by Sean Sargeant, defeated Moreno Valley 62-51 on the road in the CIF Division 6 semifinals to earn the program’s first trip to a CIF championship game.
Laguna Hills (17-11) will take on Ramona (27-5) in the finals either Friday or Saturday at a location to be announced later by CIF officials.
“This is the first time in school history boys basketball has made it to the finals,” Sargeant said Saturday. “I am very happy for our community. It takes a village to accomplish something great. Everyone has poured so much into the program in different ways for us to be successful. Feels good to make our school and community proud.”
Myles Mittelsteadt had 21 points and Jackson Burnham 20 points to lead the Hawks.
Laguna Hills, the Golden West League champion, opened the playoffs with a 85-80 road victory over Temecula Prep before defeating Carter 88-50 in the second round and Orange Vista 73-62 in the quarterfinals.
