Crean Lutheran captures CIF Division 1 playoff road win over Santiago in two overtimes

The top-seeded Crean Lutheran’s boys basketball team captured an 87-80 victory over Santiago Corona in two overtimes Friday night in the second round of the CIF Division 1 playoffs in Corona.

“Proud of the resiliency of our guys tonight,” Crean Lutheran Coach Austin Loeb said after returning home. “We showed a lot of poise in crunch time and came out on top. This is just the type of game we needed.”

Crean Lutheran (23-7) moves on to the quarterfinals to host Village Christian (23-6) Tuesday night in the quarterfinals.

Chadrack Mpoyi scored 27 points and had 10 rebounds to lead Crean Lutheran. Hunter Caplan had one of his best games of the season, scoring 25 points and dishing off three assists.

Jacob Majok had 12 points and seven rebounds and Caden Jones had 11 points. Nick Giarrusso had six points, nine rebounds and six assists for the Saints.

Crean Lutheran had a three-point lead in regulation before Santiago tied it up to send the game into overtime. Crean Lutheran had to battle back from a two-point deficit in the first overtime to tie the game and send it into a second overtime tied 73-73.

Santiago (26-6) was led by Matt Bernal, who had 23 points.
