Segerstrom High School’s wrestling program has enjoyed a highly-successful season this year under Coach Juan Moroyoqui.
Both the boys and girls teams recorded decisive Golden West League victories last week to celebrate senior night at the last home dual meet of the season.
The boys team is 5-1 overall (4-1 in league).
“But we’ve won our last four duals in a row, by a combined score of 267-51,” Moroyoqui said. “We’re hoping to use this momentum to propel us into a deep CIF duals run this Saturday. This is a very resilient group, and they’re eager for more opportunities to prove themselves.”

The boys team is led by Kamrin Lovio (21-7, 5-0 in league, 113 pounds).
“Kamrin is a senior and has placed at a few tournaments this year, most notably at the Costa Mesa Classic and Cossarek Classic,” Moroyoqui said. “He is one of our captains that everybody in the room looks up to. He’s a two time league champion and a CIF placer, and he is looking to add a trip to state to his resume this year.”
Three other top wrestlers are Artemis Shmuel (16-6, 4-1 in league, 132 pounds), Abel Gonzalez (16-6, 5-0 in league, 182 pounds) and Dylan Avila (17-6, 4-1 in league, 220 pounds).
“These three have all come up in our program together, and have all been varsity athletes since their freshman year,” Moroyoqui said “We’re very excited for next year knowing we’ve got these guys to lead our stellar Class of ‘23.”
All three placed at two prestigious tournaments including one at Costa Mesa.
The league finals are Saturday, Feb. 5 at Segerstrom.
The girls team is 6-0 overall and 5-0 in league and clinched the first league title in school history, Moroyoqui said.
“The girls have been pretty dominant in duals this year, out scoring our opponents 323-72 this year,” the coach said. “We can’t wait to see what we’re able to accomplish this post season and the years to come.”
The girls team is led by Savannah Guzman (17-2, 5-0 in league, 116 pounds).
“Savannah is another one of our senior captains and leaders in the room. The large majority of our girls are in their first year, so it’s great to have Savannah lead by example,” Moroyoqui said. “She’s made the finals for two tournaments this year, winning one of them.
“Last year, she qualified and competed in the unofficial state championship, so she’s hoping to end her year with a trip to Bakersfield and propel her into the world of college wrestling.”
