Western High School’s senior quarterback Anthony Luna is having another remarkable year, leading the Pioneers into the quarterfinal round of the CIF Division 5 playoffs Friday night.
Luna passed for 195 yards and three touchdowns in Western’s 42-14 victory over Colony in an opening round road game. The Pioneers (10-1) host Apple Valley (6-4-1) Friday night.
In his career, Luna has thrown for 8,809 yards and has now thrown for 114 touchdowns, which is a Western record, passing Anthony Munoz of 103 touchdowns in his career, according to Western Coach Dan Davidson.
“He will need another 558 yards to break Munoz’s yardage mark of 9,366 yards,” Davidson said.
Davidson said the defense was outstanding in Friday’s victory.
“Malachi Alatorre had an amazing game with 11 rushes for 140 yards and on defense had 12 tackles, two tackles for a loss and a 57 yard interception return for a touchdown,” Davidson said.
Johannes “JoJo” Klein had 11 tackles, a sack, two tackles for a loss and a 37 yard interception return for a touchdown. Clayton Corbett had 14 tackles, three tackles for a loss and a sack.
Josh Faulkner had 102 yards rushing a TD as well as 36 yards receiving with a touchdown, Davidson added.
The victory avenged a 54-27 loss to Colony in the quarterfinal round of the Division 9 playoffs in 2021.
